Get to Know the Real Greece

There are few better places to go on holiday than Greece – it offers sun, history and wonderful Mediterranean food. Yet it is possible to come here without getting a real sense of Greece and many tourists leave having only seen the inside of their hotel. This is a great shame as Greece holidays are an incredible opportunity to learn about a whole new culture, and get to grips with a very different pace of life.

The best way to get to know Greece, or anywhere really, is to spend a fair bit of time there. One week in the country will not give you much of an idea of the local people. Instead, you need to spend a fair bit of time in one place. If you walk the same streets day after day, and dine in the same cafes, you will gradually get to know the local people and thus learn about the country itself. You can learn much more about a nation by staying in one place than by wandering from one destination to another with a guide book. If you are looking to stay for an extended period of time, it would be wise to look into renting some accommodation as otherwise your hotel bills are liable to build up.

Greece tourism

Food is a very important part of Greek culture and a holiday here is a great opportunity to get to know it. The best way to do this is by wandering off the beaten track and into little cafes and bistros where you can sample local fare and drinks. A good tool for this is a language guide with a section on food, as this will encourage you to order off otherwise unintelligible menus. Above all, be sure to avoid tourist traps which serve low-quality fare – you can find this kind of food anywhere in the world so don’t waste your time in Greece eating pizzas and hamburgers.

Greece accommodation

Finally, you should do your best to pick up the language – this is certainly a difficult proposition as Greek is by no means easy. Compounding this is the fact that many people here speak English and you can easily get by with your native tongue. That said, it is well worth making the effort and learning Greek – locals may give you directions in English but they are unlikely to get into true conversations with you in this language. By picking up the local tongue you give yourself the opportunity to make a connection with others, and that is really what travelling to a new country is all about.

Learning about a new country is a difficult task, and it takes time and a bit of dedication to really get to know Greece. Luckily, you don’t need to do it all in one shot as holiday providers have made it incredibly easy and affordable to get here. This means that you can come back again and again to this great country, learning something new each time.
