Cathedral Grove, located in MacMillan Provincial Park, is one of the most accessible stands of giant Douglas fir trees on Vancouver Island. You can stroll through a network of trails under the shadow of towering ancient Douglas-fir trees, majestic pillars untouched by the modern world – some more than 800 years old.
We went this weekend and the drive is fabulous from the main Island Highway (#4) to this park. You can park on either side of the highway. MacMillan Park (Cathedral Grove) is located on central Vancouver Island, 25 km west of Qualicum Beach and 16 km east of Port Alberni on Hwy #4, which runs right through the park. From Hwy #19 and Hwy #19a take the exit to head west on Hwy #4 toward Port Alberni.
The speed limit while driving through the park is only 50km / hour so be extra careful crossing to either side of the park. We saw many drivers speeding.
It is great for kids to just wander the easy trail in the park. It is a nice photo-op as shown in the gallery!
